Police: 'Scary Clown Threats' Were Prank By 13-Year-Old Girl

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police in Philadelphia say a 13-year-old girl has been implicated in what they're calling "scary clown threats" on social media, and she told them the posts were a prank.

Police on Monday say the girl who attends a "local school" never had any intent to harm anyone by the posts she made with a friend. They threatened specific schools around Philadelphia.

They say the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney's office for review.

On Sunday, Philadelphia Public School District and police officials released in a joint statement saying they were taking the clown threats seriously.

The statement didn't say which schools were named.

Police around the country have encouraged caution as people in a number of states have reported scary or suspicious encounters with people dressed like clowns.
