Bethel Park Police warning shoppers of purse thefts at Giant Eagle stores

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Bethel Park police are warning residents about an uptick in purse thefts from grocery stores.

"Oh, it's just scary," said Deborah Bavas, who had just finished shopping at the Giant Eagle on Library Road in Bethel Park.

"I think that's horrendous," said Cassie Scarpino, who was entering the Giant Eagle Market District on Oxford Drive.

Shoppers in Bethel Park are on edge after police said three thefts were reported this past weekend in the two Giant Eagles.

"My daughter's here," said Bavas. "She brings her kids and can be easily distracted. It's just very scary, and I hope they figure out who's doing it."

Police Chief Timothy O'Connor said women left their purses open in their shopping carts and a group of suspects targeted them. He said the suspects distracted the customers while another stole their wallets.

"It's pretty safe around here," said Scarpino. "I've been living in South Hills the majority of my life. Knowing that's happening definitely does not give you an easy feeling at all."

O'Connor said by the time the shoppers realized their wallet was missing, the suspects already spent thousands of dollars.

Customers KDKA talked to said they'll be even more cautious.

"I'm definitely going to be hanging onto my stuff more frequently and keeping an eye on my surroundings and what I normally carry with me," said Scarpino.

"Just be more aware of what's around; try not to be distracted," said Bavas.

The department reminded shoppers to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

O'Connor said the suspects are female and may speak with a Jamaican accent. They also wear a hat and face mask to hide their appearance.

If you suspect any suspicious behavior, you're advised to contact the police as soon as possible.
