Police Looking For Driver Who Hit Pedestrian In Shenango Township
SHENANGO TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A man continues to recover in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle as he walked to work in Lawrence County over the weekend.
Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, 33-year-old David Sheller was walking in the 2000 block of East Washington Street in Shenango Township, near Elham's Restaurant.
Shenango Township Police say a vehicle headed north crossed the white fog line and struck Sheller from behind, spinning him around and knocking him to the ground. The vehicle did not slow down and fled the scene.
Almost two days later, Sheller is covered in bandages and laying in a hospital bed inside Allegheny General Hospital. But he says he's thankful to be alive.
"Looks like I got into a prize fight and took the worst end of it," says Sheller. "My wrist is broken, my leg, my ankle, my foot."
Meanwhile, Sheller's wife is devastated.
"Trying to stay strong for my two daughters," said Heather Sheller, David's wife. "I can't believe this happened."
The owner of Elham's was heading out for the night when he witnessed the whole thing happen.
"He was going too fast. Neither we or the cameras was able to pick up what kind of car it was," said Abdou Saada, the owner of Elham's.
"Felt like it really shoved me hard, and that's when I realized I was on top of the hood, that they'd hit me and I hit the windshield, and it felt like they swerved a little bit and I fell off and bounced a couple times," said Sheller.
Police reviewed area surveillance video and say it appears to be a dark-colored sedan that struck the man. The vehicle kept going in the direction of New Castle.
A volunteer firefighter leaving a nearby restaurant was the first to come to the man's aid, before paramedics arrived.
"A friend of mine, who's a volunteer firefighter for Union, gave him first aid, what's your name, checked on him, tried to keep him occupied until the ambulance got here," said Saada.
Sheller's wife just gave birth to a baby two weeks ago, and now she is at home with no help and no income coming in. She's pleading for the driver to turn himself or herself in.
"You need to turn yourself in, something, even if to a family member," said Heather. "Turn yourself in because this is wrong."
Shenango Township Police are still looking for the vehicle involved in this crash. They don't know what kind of car it is, just a dark-colored vehicle.
If you have any information on the vehicle involved in the crash, you're asked to call police.
