Police Investigating String Of Burglaries Near IUP

INDIANA (KDKA) - Police are investigating a string of burglaries near the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus.

Investigators say the suspects are allegedly targeting members of fraternities and sororities.

A total of seven incidents have taken place on South Seventh Street recently.

Some students have reportedly been touched, whispered to and had their property stolen.

The incidents usually occur between 3 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

"Even though these burglaries didn't happen on campus, they're around the perimeter of the campus, and we want our students to be prepared," said Michelle Fryling, IUP's director of communications.

To that end, the university sent out a mass email warning students to be careful and exercise commonsense personal security.

"Watch out, lock your doors, I've been telling my friends," said Victor Montoya, an IUP student. "We look out for each other. We're a community here."

Both Indiana Borough and Indiana University Police are asking students, if they witness an incident or in fact fall victim to one, to please call them as soon as possible.

"As much as you'd like to put a bubble over this campus, and let nothing happen, sometimes bad things do happen," said Fryling.
