Police: Couple Who Fatally Struck Woman Thought They Hit A Deer
DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Charlotte Anderson's life ended when state police say the 42-year-old wife and mother was struck by a vehicle at the intersections of Route 22 and 982 in Derry Township.
"The original call came in as female pedestrian dead along Route 22. We were concerned we had a hit and run crash," said Trooper Steve Limani.
But not long after, the driver of the vehicle involved contacted law enforcement saying they believed they were responsible -- social media playing a large role.
"The people learned about the crash through Facebook post that said there was a woman killed along Route 22 right around the time they were on the road and thought they struck an animal a deer," Limani said.
Anderson apparently was heading to Derry to meet a friend when she tried to cross the highway.
Anderson, originally from Texas, leaves a 14-year-old son and husband. The couple had been looking for a home in the area.
Investigators say it was already dark out and the victim had dark pants and a dark coverall. She may have crossed against the light on a road with a 55 mile per hour speed limit.
