Police Investigating Fatal Parkway North Pedestrian Accident

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident along the Parkway North early Monday morning.

According to police, the accident happened on the northbound side of the road about one mile south of the Interstate 79/279 split.

State Police said there are still a number of unanswered questions in this case. The biggest question is why the woman was walking along the interstate to begin with.

Police say just before 4 a.m., a minivan struck a woman walking right in one of the northbound lanes.

She has been identified as Heather Kuhn, 28, of Pittsburgh.

"All I know is that she was actually in a lane of travel. How she was walking or how fast she was walking or how she ended up in that lane of travel, I'm not sure, but she was struck by that minivan," State Police Trooper Robin Mungo said.

Police said Kuhn was killed on impact and was thrown nearly 225 feet before coming to a rest on the road.

Kuhn's sister said the family is devastated by the accident.

She said Kuhn graduated from Pittsburgh CAPA, the School for the Creative and Performing Arts. She also attended classes at the Pittsburgh campus of the Kaplan Career Institute.

Meanwhile, the driver immediately stopped and was cooperative with police.

"Who expects for a person to be in their lane? Maybe a deer or an animal, but not a person. So, this is not a hit-and-run case. We're not looking to file charges against the driver at this point in time," Trooper Mungo said.

Police shut down the Parkway North's northbound lanes for hours during the morning rush while they conducted an accident reconstruction.

Traffic was diverted off of I- 279 at Camp Horne Road.

Although the scene has cleared, State Police are still working to piece everything together.
