Police Increase Patrols In Hill District Following Teen's Shooting Death
HILL DISTRICT (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police Zone 2 Commander Eric Holmes said Friday night that there would be an increased police presence in the Hill District neighborhood in the aftermath of this week's fatal shooting of a 17-year-old.
The teen, Eric Young, was fatally gunned down Wednesday on his way to school.
Holmes told reporters, "you will see additional police officers [in the neighborhood] in uniforms, in cars, and on foot."
Holmes blamed the upsurge in recent Hill District violence on two gangs in the areas. He didn't name the gangs.
He said there was a community meeting earlier today, and leaders were in full support of additional police patrols.
Holmes also said investigators would also be focusing more on social media as they look for answers to the crime problems, and try to reduce gun-related violence.
Young was shot at by someone last month as he was walking to school. But, he was not insured. And, earlier this year, he was charged in Penn Hills with robbery, but, the case was later transferred to juvenile court.
In the other local violent teen death, District Attorney Stephen Zappala revealed today that 16-year-old Teaira Whitehead, whose body was found on Monday in Riverview Park on the North Side, was doused with bleach.
Zappala said "that usually indicates someone has assaulted someone else, and they're trying to eliminate DNA evidence."
