Police Chief Addresses Violent Crime, Names Hardest Hit Areas
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Although violent crime is down in Pittsburgh compared to previous years, violent crimes are still making headlines everyday. Funerals are almost a weekly occurrence.
According to Chief Cameron McLay, 83 percent of the victims are black. The average victim's age 15 to 24. The hardest hit areas: East Liberty and Homewood.
The solution?
"We want to be policing with the community not at the community's expense, having those lines of communication, we want to make sure we get it right," McLay said. "We're working within the constraints of 907. We're using the combination of research, data, best practices to do the very best we can."

KDKA asked those living in high crime areas what should be done.
"I would say that there's too many guns in the streets and there needs to be a stop and search," said Edwin Mathews of Homewood.
"I think more police on the streets has gotta be the best thing," said Jeremy Riter of Cheswick.
"Have your community patrol, community input from the citizens, stay on top of it, be consistent, get citizens patrolling their own neighborhoods with the police," said Ronald Sanders of Homewood.
