2 Arrested After Police Chase Ends In Crash On South Side
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) – There was a big mess on the South Side Thursday night, after a police chase ended with a crash.
Police say Shang Smith and Bryant Boyd were both wanted on warrants. An officer spotted Smith driving a car, and police say he is a known gang member.
According to the criminal complaint, Smith flipped his vehicle on Salisbury Street, crashing into a porch and causing it to collapse.
Neighbors say it could have been a lot worse.
"They could have killed somebody, they could have killed - those people just put two chairs on their front porch, and a table to be sitting outside, they could have been sitting outside there and they would be dead right now," said neighbor Kathy Welsh.
After the crash, both men got out of the car and tried to run away from the scene.
"Everybody just converged," said Welsh. "The neighbor just converged, he's over here, he's over here. We all look out for each other, you see something that ain't right, you do something about it."
Smith was arrested by officers, and they found Boyd hiding under a porch furniture cover.
Both men were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the crash. Both men have since been transferred to the Allegheny County Jail.
Police found a loaded gun on the sidewalk, which the men admitted was thrown out of the window during the chase. Police also found counterfeit money in the car.
The car belonged to one of the suspect's mothers. She told police they did not have permission to take the car.
