Police chase ends in crash on Liberty Bridge after gunfire in Dormont

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A chase involving a Chevy Camaro and Allegheny County police ended in a crash on the Liberty Bridge early Friday morning.

According to police, just before 4:30 a.m., they responded to shots fired call in the 2800 block of Broadway Avenue in Dormont. Investigators said there was a confrontation that led to gunfire.

"That's crazy. This is a really safe neighborhood. Kids are always running up and down the streets and playing. We never have any problems," Kelli Lees from Dormont said.

Lees lives nearby and didn't hear anything.

"I would have thought it was a firework or something because I wouldn't have expected to hear gunshots in this area," Lees said.

Police saw several people running from the scene. They tried to stop a Camaro that was leaving but lost it on West Liberty Avenue.

Not long after, the car was found crashed on the Liberty Bridge at the ramp leading to the Boulevard of the Allies.

Three of the four people inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. KDKA cameras captured one person being taken away in handcuffs. There were no reported injuries from the gunfire in Dormont.

"To hear there was a shooting is kind of scary and wild. We walk our dog day and night. I walk him by myself, and there's never any worries my husband needs to be with me," Lees said.

There's no word on any charges or who fired the gun. Investigators are working with the district attorney's office.
