Police Arrest Bentleyville Robbery Suspect After Following Footprints In Snow
BENTLEYVILLE (KDKA) – Police in Washington County took a robbery suspect into custody after following his footprints in the snow Tuesday morning.
It all started just after 8:30 a.m. when police say the suspect, who was wearing a mask, tried unsuccessfully to rob the Medicine Shop on Main Street.
When that didn't work, he went next to Jet's Market, which is a few blocks away. He was holding what looked like a real gun.
The incident was caught on surveillance video.
"The robber is… came up to the front of the store at the register with the owner of the store, Bob, and he is asking for all of the money in the register," said one witness who didn't want to be identify.
"I was getting nervous," said Gerald Peters, another witness. "He wouldn't take his hand out of his pocket. I didn't know if it was a real gun or what."
But witnesses say getting the money wasn't enough for this suspect.
"Then, he is asking now for a pack of cigarettes. Then, he takes the money and the pack of cigarettes, and he is out the front door," said the witness who didn't want to be identified.
He also reportedly asked for keys to a car, but was told no.
So, he left, heading to a wooded area behind the store. That's where police were able to track is footsteps.
"The state cops came, and I showed them down there where he walked," said Peters. "I showed them where the tracks, and they went right to the creek, and that's where he threw the gun."
