Point Park President Leads Students On Bike Tour Of City

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Some Point Park University students had a unique opportunity today.

They spent time, checking out the city on two wheels and their tour guide was the president of the university.

About two dozen Point Park University students dodged the rain to take a trip around the heart of Pittsburgh.

They met at the Golden Triangle Bike Rental and after snapping a few pictures and a quick chat with university President Paul Hennigan, they took off.

The journey spanned 14 miles from Downtown to the South Side and all the way to Washington's Landing.

"As a young person growing up, it's important to learn where you are and what the culture is where you are. So, wherever you are in the world, you can figure out how to assimilate yourself into another culture," Hennigan said.

The students are all residence life staff students, who work directly with incoming freshman.

"It's good for them because it brings them together. It's good for me because I get to meet them and then they can also take their freshman on a bike tour, which is a very cool way to show new students Pittsburgh," Hennigan said.

"We make sure that everyone has a good living and learning experience and he's showing that he cares and that he wants to take us out and show us what's around, so we can help people see how great Pittsburgh is," Amanda Belfiore said.

This is the fourth year Hennigan has offered the tour to students.

Each time, the group stops at historical spots like the Hot Metal Bridge and Point State Park.

"It's a lot of fun and especially for people who aren't from around here. It's just nice for them to see the area," Dan Helbling said.

"Even for people that were born and raised in Pittsburgh, when they do this bike ride, they're amazed because they've never seen Pittsburgh that way. Plus, they've also learned some history, and I just think as a school, as a university, that's just all part of the total learning package," Hennigan said.
