Fire Causes $75,000 Worth Of Damage To Playground
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A playground was badly damaged by fire in Beltzhoover Saturday afternoon.
The fire started around 3 p.m. at Warrington Field, right next to the Warrington Recreation Center. Officials are calling it suspicious.
Flames melted the rubber mats and plastic on the playground set. Officials say the safety mats are very expensive and the damage to the playground is estimated to be worth $75- to $100,000.
"Somebody just don't care," said a neighbor named Jessie. "I feel sorry for our kids."
The city says it's self-insured and isn't sure where the money will come from or when they'll be able to fix it.
"At least the whole playground wasn't destroyed, we'll be able to salvage some parts of this," said Pittsburgh Public Works Director Mike Gable.
It's unclear who started the fire, but a witness said she saw some kids playing with a cigarette lighter.
Officials say the fire was severe enough to even melt the plastic used for the equipment.
They also say they'll be looking at surveillance footage to try to find out who started the fire.
