Does It Really Do That? Play And Freeze Ice Cream Ball

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Summer and ice cream go hand in hand. A new product called the Play and Freeze Ice Cream Ball claims you don't have to pause the fun to make delicious homemade ice cream.

Does it really do that? KDKA-TV Morning News anchor Jennifer Antkowiak took advantage of a sunny day to give it a test.

Antkowiak went to a baseball field and had plenty of willing helpers from some all-stars with the South Fayette team. The kids liked the look of the Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker and thought it sounded fun.

It's a plastic ball that includes a freezing chamber for the ingredients on one side, and an empty space on the other side that you fill with ice and rock salt. It also comes with some recipes and a little plastic tool you can use to scrape the sides.

Antkowiak had plenty of helping hands to add the cream, sugar and vanilla for the ice cream the kids wanted to try. From there, all that was left to do was shake. The instructions say to gently shake, toss and kick the ice cream ball for about ten minutes to make the ice cream - and the kids did it all!

They stopped, as directed, about five minutes into it to check on the consistency. Although the ice cream was still pretty soupy, harder ice cream was forming on the sides of the chamber.

At ten minutes, the ice cream was soft serve consistency, and it got harder with a few more minutes of shaking.

The kids were eager to see how it tasted.

"How's that?" Antkowiak asked.

"That tastes like vanilla ice cream," one boy said with a big smile on his face.

"Does it taste like good vanilla ice cream?" Antkowiak asked.

"Yes!" he answered.
