Pittsburgh Weather: First Alert Weather Day issued for Friday ahead of strong winds, rain and a wintry mix for some

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Friday is First Alert Weather Day because of strong winds and freezing rain for Garrett County, Maryland, where there is an ice storm warning starting at 7 a.m. and going until 11 p.m.

Wind gusts there will also be upwards of 65 mph and there could be 0.25 to 0.40 inches of ice accumulation. 

Then there is a high wind watch for Fayette, Westmoreland and Indiana counties starting Friday afternoon and going until 1 a.m. Saturday. Somerset County is also under a winter weather advisory for a wintry mix and a windy advisory there going until Friday night with gusts as high as 50 mph.

North of I-80 corridor will see a wintry mix in the morning hours before it eventually switches to rain. 

Pittsburgh and surrounding regions will be seeing all rain, which will be heavy at times from the morning into the night. Rainfall totals could be anywhere between 0.5 inches to 1 inch. Isolated areas could see a bit more than an inch. 

The wind is going to be an issue for everyone. Expect wind gusts starting up in the late afternoon, and we could see up to 30 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 50 mph. Secure any outdoor loose objects before Friday afternoon.

Things will cool off for Saturday, and a lot of the rain will start to taper off. Some snowflakes will likely mix in early Saturday but clear out by the evening. Highs will top off in the low 40s.

Sunday is looking very nice with highs around 50 degrees with partly cloudy skies. 

Monday will be another warm day with highs in the low 60s under mainly cloudy skies. A few showers will try to move into the region by Tuesday, but drier conditions will settle in by mid-week.

Looking ahead to the middle of the month, the Climate Prediction Center is forecasting most of the lower 48 to experience below average temperatures. This would mean some of those days, highs would be stuck in the 30s. Don't put those winter coats away just yet.
