Pittsburgh Weather: First Alert Weather Day issued for rain and snow on Friday

KDKA-TV Afternoon Forecast (3/7)

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Friday is a First Alert Weather Day for our next system.

Rain and snow will start to build in at the start of the day. Lower elevations will see mainly rain mixing with some snowflakes. The I-80 corridor and mountains will likely be seeing the mixing/wet snow action during the day, which will create slushy and tricky conditions for roadways, especially for those areas.

Snow accumulations will be tough to measure with the coinciding rain. The mountains could see a small risk for some icy surfaces with freezing rain Friday morning through the afternoon.

Eventually everything will switch over into all snow Friday night, and light snow will linger during the first half of the weekend. Total snow accumulation amounts through Saturday will vary based on the rain mixing with snow and location. The I-80 corridor will see the brunt of the snow with 3 to 6 inches. Laurels/Ridges will see 2 to 4 inches. Pittsburgh and lower elevations will see a coating to 2 inches. This will be in total from anything that falls Friday to Saturday.

The Pittsburgh St. Patrick's Day parade is this Saturday, and it is looking chilly with temperatures in the afternoon in the low to mid-30s with light snow and breezy conditions. Dress warm and bring the snow boots if you're headed Downtown!

Saturday night, we briefly dry out through Sunday afternoon, so it'll be a decent weekend to do some skiing. Then another system will bring us some more winter weather starting late Sunday and lasting through Tuesday. This appears to be a rain/snow mixing type event before switching to all snow. The impending cold air will play a big factor in this. In fact, most of next week will be chilly with highs in the 30s to 40s.
