Pittsburgh Weather: Cold start ahead of pleasant afternoon conditions

KDKA-TV Morning Forecast (10/24)

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's going to be a very pleasant day in the Pittsburgh area after a cold morning makes way for a warm afternoon.

Any Alert Days Ahead? Nope

Aware: I have an isolated rain chance in place for both Thursday (unlikely) and Friday (best chance along I-80).

It's cold enough in some spots you'll need the window scraper or defrost to be on this morning before heading off to work or school.

For Pittsburgh, I have morning lows dropping just below 40 degrees.

The real story though is how pleasant this afternoon is going to be with highs in the low 70s.  Yesterday was a pleasant surprise with afternoon highs hitting 62 degrees.  This was a whopping FIVE degrees above what I forecast. That doesn't happen too often. Similar to yesterday the dry air mass in place and the still 'strong' sun could push temperatures a couple of degrees above what I am forecasting.

Often times when it comes to spring and fall temperatures the giant spreads from low to high can top 35 degrees. This makes an accurate forecast of highs sometimes a bit tough. Today I have our spread from high to low at 33 degrees. Yesterday's spread was 29°. We will see if temps take off and stretch our spread today to 35° or more.  It is possible.

The set-up for the next couple of days isn't as difficult as today. Our airmass 'core' temperature (best taken at 850mb) will tick down a degree or two.  Highs should remain in the low 70s with the biggest issue being just how warm our morning lows are.

I have Pittsburgh dropping to just 50 degrees. Highs through Friday should hit the 70s with lows slowly ticking up.  By Saturday morning, morning lows will dip to just near 60!

Rain chances for the weekend are coming into better view.  Sunday will have the best chance for rain with scattered showers around on Saturday.  I have now added in an isolated rain chance for Friday too.

Sunday and Monday rain comes from a powerful cold front that will be the leading edge of some colder-than-normal temperatures that will be in place on Halloween.
