Pittsburgh street sweeping set to resume after three-year pause

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Street sweeping is a sigh of spring and summer, and it does help to clean the streets. However, after loosening parking restrictions around street sweeping due to the pandemic, the city of Pittsburgh is about to get stricter in ticketing cars.

For some residents like Donald Hollis on Mt. Washington, he says street sweeping is an inconvenience for some residents who already have limited parking options.

""There is no parking on this street. Like I said, this house has been in the family for 60 years and in the last 5-to-10 years, the parking has got twice as bad," he said.

"This is the only place for everybody to park… on this street. And for them to come out and say everybody's got to be off this street by 6 a.m. so they can whatever… there is no place for them to park."

Starting April 1, tickets with fines will be issued to vehicles violating the street sweeping restrictions. There are signs along each street that is swept, outlining what days and times parking is prohibited.

Generally, neighborhood streets are swept Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. Main corridors and thoroughfares are swept on Fridays.

Also, business districts are normally cleaned at night, this is to avoid disrupting normal business activity while taking advantage of parking restrictions.

Back on Mt. Washington, Hollis says he would like to see the city be more understanding.

"Maybe more advanced notice, or maybe not quite as often. Give somebody a chance to do something, because there is nowhere for nobody to put nothing around here," Hollis added.

Remember, if anyone is pulling into a park on a city street, make sure you check the date and time on the sign to make sure a street sweeper is not about to come through.
