Pittsburgh Public Schools hosts back-to-school event
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Public Schools held its annual back-to-school event Monday to help students get what they need to be successful in the classroom.
One by one, students, parents, and grandparents lined up early at Acrisure Stadium to get a variety of supplies.
"They were so excited about getting a bag full of school supplies," parent Kirstyn Donella said.
Pittsburgh public schools sponsored the event with a long list of partners including former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch and his Best of the Batch Foundation.
"Folders, crayons, markers, whatever they may need throughout the course of the school year to make sure everyone is on an even playing field," Batch said.
But that is not all students had the opportunity to get.
"Haircuts, hairstyles, manicures, COVID tests, hand sanitizers, whatever you think your family may need for the first day of school," Merecedes Williams of Pittsburgh Public Schools said.
Jalena Talton of Pittsburgh Obama 6-12 got a new style and new gear for the school year. She said she is looking forward to one thing this year.
"Seeing my friends," Talton said.
Abby Hall of Pittsburgh Woolslair Pre K-5, meanwhile, got a manicure with newly shaded nails.
"I'm getting my nails done, and I'm getting this cool purple color," Hall said.
Pittsburgh Public School gave away about 3,500 backpacks full of school supplies on Monday.
