Stabbing at Pittsburgh's Mellon Park sends three people to the hospital

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Two people were stabbed in the chest and another was stabbed in the wrist in Pittsburgh's Mellon Park early Tuesday morning inside a vehicle in the parking lot area, police said.

Pittsburgh police said that officers from Zone 4 were dispatched to the parking lot along Fifth Avenue after receiving reports of a stabbing.

Police said when officers arrived at the scene, they found three men with stab wounds.

The two men stabbed in the chest were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but have since been upgraded to stable condition, according to Pittsburgh police. The third victim that had a minor cut to the wrist was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Detectives at the scene were observed picking up at least two knives while processing evidence. Police said a vehicle was towed to the city's Auto Squad garage to process additional evidence.

Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit are handling the investigation into the stabbing, which police described as ongoing.

It's unclear if there are any suspects or if anyone else involved left the scene before officers and medics arrived. There is no outstanding risk to the public, police said.

By the time the sun came out and Dana Blitstein of Squirrel Hill got to the park for tennis, the scene was gone.

"These kind of things happen, and it's just the nature of living in a place that's dense with a lot of people," Blitstein said.

For the most part, she feels safe, and so does David Weinstein of Regent Park.

"I've not seen any sort of aggressiveness from anyone in the park here," Weinstein said.

It's just about taking precautions.

"You can't be scared, you have to really just be vigilant, watch where you're walking, don't, you know, hold your cell phone while you're walking," Blitstein said.

Investigators have yet to make any arrests. If you have any information about what happened, you're asked to call Pittsburgh police at 412-323-7800.
