2 Pittsburgh schools on modified lockdown after shooting killed 17-year-old student

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A teenager is dead and two people were injured after a shooting in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said officers found three victims shot on East Warrington Avenue near the Dollar General on Monday around 6 p.m.

"We were eating dinner inside, and we heard about 17 shots fired," one neighbor said.

A 17-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, a man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot in the chest and a woman who was shot in the leg is in stable condition, officials said.

The victim was identified as Isaiah Dennis Anderson by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.

Pittsburgh Police Commander John Fisher said the shooter or shooters fired 28 shots outside the Dollar General.

"We came out to see a victim being placed on a stretcher immediately and removed from the scene and a body that was lying on the ground," a neighbor said.

Police sources tell KDKA-TV that they believe this was an ambush and retaliation. Police are unsure if the victims knew each other and believe two possible suspects may have run off after the shooting.

A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Schools said Anderson most recently attended the Pittsburgh Student Achievement Center. He attended Carrick High School before that. Both schools will be on a modified lockdown on Tuesday.

In a statement released Tuesday morning through their spokesperson, Pittsburgh Public Schools said:

"It is with deep sadness we report the death of Pittsburgh Public Schools student Isaiah Anderson. The 17-year-old was killed in a shooting last night on Warrington Avenue. Isaiah was most recently a student at the Pittsburgh Student Achievement Center (SAC). Prior to attending the SAC, Isaiah was a student at Pittsburgh Carrick. He will be missed by all who knew him. Student and Employee Assistance supports have been provided to both schools. Both schools will operate on a modified lockdown today an added precautionary measure. A modified lockdown means that no one will be permitted to enter or exit the facility without a prescheduled appointment."

Jay Beal drives his eighth grade son to the Student Achievement Center every day. Beal along with other parents had mixed emotions Tuesday morning.

They felt at ease knowing the modified lockdown was in place as a precautionary measure so only people with prescheduled appointments were allowed to enter and exit the facilities.

"I don't want anyone getting in the school and hurting the kids," said Beal.

"I mean it's safe because nobody can get in and nobody can get out," said Donna Sciulli, whose granddaughter goes to the school. "I am grateful for that."

But the parents are also upset because another local teenager has died.

"Anybody being killed before their time is wrong and for what reason?" said Beal. "It's probably something so simple that somebody had to die for."

Parents said these shootings need to stop, especially among youth.

"My heart goes out to the parents for kids like that," said Sciulli. "You're not even safe in your own houses anymore."

May 27 will mark one year since another 17-year-old Izeyah Clancy was shot and killed in the same area.

"They need to get the guns off the streets," Sciulli said. "Parents are having the guns. Kids are getting the guns. These are not toys."

No arrests have been made at this time.
