Pitt Comes Up Short In Final Seconds, Losing 48-45
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It was a long, tough day for the No. 18 Pittsburgh Panthers as they came up short in the final second against Virginia, losing 48-45 thanks to a three-point shot by Cavalier's guard Malcolm Brogdon.
The game turned out to be a boxing match from the opening tip, as there were a total of eight lead changes and 15 ties.
The biggest blows, however, would happen in the final minutes of the game with just less than seven minutes remaining as Pitt's Cameron Wright scored his first points of the game with a three-point buzzer-beater, to beat the shot clock as the Panthers took the lead 44-41.
Virginia then came back with four free-throws of their own to eventually tie the game up at 45 points. Pitt, however, didn't answer back as they missed two key lay-ups in the final minutes of the game.
Finally, with only nine seconds left, Virginia took the ball all the way up the floor. London Perrantes passed the ball to Malcolm Brogdon, shooting up a prayer from beyond the ark -- with just 0.4 seconds remaining and drained it through the nylon, giving the Cavaliers the win.
Throughout the game, Pitt struggled all over the offensive end, shooting only 31.9 percent from the field, as Lamar Patterson and Jamel Artis were the only players in double-figures.
The game was the team's second straight loss at home and the third home loss this season.
The Panthers now look to snap their two-game losing streak Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they go to Miami to take on Hurricanes.
