Pirates Starter Vance Worley Recounts Complete Game Shutout Of Giants
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Fresh off his 100-pitch, complete game shutout of the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, Pirates Starting Pitcher Vance Worley joined Starkey and Mueller to talk about that game and his season as a whole.
"For me, it's just taking it one batter at a time, one pitch at a time," Worley said. "I had good defense behind me and Russell [Martin] was calling a good game for me just keeping the game going, good rhythm."
Giving credit to Russell Martin for calling a great game for him against the Giants, Worley talks about what it's like to work with a veteran like Martin.
"What I've noticed is he takes the game into his own hands," Worley said. "It's not only the pitchers game out there. For every hit that we give up, it's his hit. Every loss that we get, it's his loss and he takes it personal. He just wants to have us have success out there, and he doesn't want to take any credit for it but in the end, it's really him that's helping us."
There were some great plays made behind him in his complete game shutout, the one that stuck out the most being the Mercer-Walker double play highlight, and Worley talks about what it's like watching a play like that being made behind him.
"I was pumped up," Worley remembered. "To get the ground ball, and for even Mercer to flip it with the glove flip, I mean that already started out awesome. And for him [Walker] to get it and somehow keep his foot on the bag, bare hand catch, turn and fire, I mean he really didn't even look at first base, he was just firing. To have him throw a bullet right to Sanchez, I think it fired everybody up."
Worley also talked about what the atmosphere is like in the Pirates clubhouse right now, why he likes to work so quickly on the mound and how he messes with batters who try to throw off him timing.
