Pirates GM Huntington: "We Would Still Like To Add To This Team"

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - With the Major League Baseball trade deadline a week away, Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington joined The Cook and Poni Show on Friday to discuss the trade that brought Aramis Ramirez back to the Pirates and possible other deals.

"When we lost both our shortstop and third baseman we felt we had to target an infielder," Huntington said. "We had to give up a good arm, but we get a very good, very motivated player in return."

Huntington did address the money in the Ramirez deal could help the Pirates have more flexibility to make other deals.

Could Pedro Alvarez be one of those who is dealt next? Huntington would not rule out anything at this point but did indicate there is always a great deal of misinformation out there at this time every year.

"There has been conversations on a number of our players," Huntington said. "If I dispute every false rumor then I paint myself into a corner when there might be some truth to the rumors that are out there."

Huntington says he does want to add to this club by next Friday's deadline but it has to be at a price that makes sense to the club.

"We want to be in a position to win a World Series this year," Huntington said. "But we also want to be in a position to play meaningful baseball in September and playoff baseball in October as many times as we consistently can going forward."
