Pirates Fans Excited For Opening Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- PNC Park was alive Saturday, with workers making last minute preparations for the Pirates home opener on Sunday.

The game against rivals St. Louis Cardinals is a near-sellout, but some fans got lucky at the box office and purchased last-minute tickets.

"When we were looking online they seemed to be expensive, but we were down here and said 'well lets see what we can do' they seemed to be pretty reasonable," Tom Komorowski said.

The field at PNC Park is in near-perfect condition. The city of Pittsburgh will put on it's best face for the first nationally televised baseball game of the season. President Frank Coonelly said the Pirates are excited.

"It's an honor great honor obviously to have Major League Baseball and ESPN, our good television partner, decide that the season should begin at PNC Park with us and the St. Louis Cardinals," he said.

Meanwhile fans are clearly excited. Andrew Ball bought some new Pirates gear after driving to the 'Burgh from Mrytle Beach.

"I drove 11, 12 hours to get here so I'm excited, the Bucs, we're going to make the playoffs this year we're going further this year," he said.

Tomorrow may be the Pirates home opener but the weather is going to feel more like a Steelers game in November. Temperatures are only going to be in the 30s.
