Pipe Burst Destroys Light Of Life Mission Donations
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The director of the Light of Life Mission calls it heartbreaking.
The storage facility on the North Side flooded after a pipe burst.
It's located on Ridge Avenue.
The building houses all of the donations before they're sorted and distributed.
It's a massive storage facility that showcases Pittsburgh's generosity, but nearly half of it was ruined.
"I found out Sunday around 2-o-clock that we had a pipe break in our sprinkler system," said Executive Director Craig Schweiger. "The message I had was we have a disaster."
The area hardest hit housed toys and women's clothing.
Water was gushing out for four hours before anyone detected the break.
"The water was gushing out," Schweiger said. "We called up the city and they sent folks here as quickly as they could to get it shut off at the curb, but by the time that came out that was – like I said – when the water was chest-high in sections of the building."
Now the focus is on cleaning the mess and replacing all those donations.
They're looking for volunteers to help get rid of the items that were damaged, as well as replenishing the things that were lost.
Volunteers will be working throughout the week.
