Crews Rescue Man Trapped Inside Vehicle Overturned In Creek Off Route 8 In Shaler
SHALER, Pa. (KDKA) - Crews worked quickly to rescue a man who was stuck inside a vehicle that overturned in a creek in Shaler.
Water rescue was called to the scene at 3400 Route 8 in Shaler on Thursday.
A man had slid off of East Elfinwild Road and into Pine Creek. His vehicle flipped upsidedown and was nearly completely submerged in a creek.
The 76-year-old man in the vehicle was safely out of the car within 15 minutes.
Shaler Township Police identified the man as Paul Skerl of Shaler.
"I was at my desk when I hear the loud bang," witness Gretchen Evashavik said. "I looked and I saw the car in the water."
While only the undercarriage of the car was visible, police say the man wasn't underwater and could still breathe.
When the call first went out, police were asking for heavy wrecking equipment for the rescue attempt.
The man inside the car was taken to the hospital.
"It's truly a miracle he is still alive," Deputy Chief Sean Frank of the Shaler Township police said.
