Pens Take To The Lanes To Raise Money For Make-A-Wish
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Just because you are professional athlete, doesn't mean you are good at all sporting activities.
Case in point -- the Pittsburgh Penguins and bowling.
When the Penguins take the ice, they are covered from head to toe in protective gear. Thursday night, all they needed was a pair of shoes and bowling ball.
"They know how bad we are at bowling so the expectations are low and we just come out here and have some fun," Sidney Crosby said.
And, it was all for a good cause.
The team's 7th Annual Pens and Pins bowling tournament raised money for Make-A-Wish and children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
"We have a wish kid on every single lane. So, we have about 24 wish kids here really, really enjoying the night," Stephanie Pugliese, of Make-A-Wish, said.
The entire team participated and while guys like Kris Letang aren't exactly skilled at the game, it doesn't matter a bit to the Make-A-Wish families.
"It's unbelievable what they do for these kids. It's just, they forget about everything. They forget about the hospitals. They forget about their scars. They forget about just being sick and they are just happy," Christine McGregor said.
"Being here in the city and part of a team, that's a way you can give back. That's an opportunity here again tonight and I think there's a number of things we are involved in, I think individually and as a team, that we are more than happy to be part of and help out in any way we can," Crosby said.
Since 2009, the Pens and Pins event has raised more than $300,000 for the local Make-A-Wish organization.
