PennDOT Rolls Out Effort To Upgrade Traffic Lights

HARRISBURG (AP) - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says a new program to help pay for traffic signal upgrades should reduce congestion.

The agency on Tuesday announced "Green Light-Go," funded by gasoline taxes and fees from last year's transportation law.

Governments can apply for money to improve signals on state-owned roads. They'll have to manage projects in areas that get relatively less traffic, but PennDOT will handle them on roads that handle more than 10,000 vehicles per day.

The funding requires local municipalities to pay for half the cost.

The state is contributing a statewide total of up to $10 million this year, $25 million next year and $40 million in the following years.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 14.
