PENN HILLS (KDKA) – A water main break along Beulah Road in Penn Hills sent asphalt flying high into the air on Wednesday morning.

The force of the rushing water bucked the road and flooded several basements and garages.

"I was eating breakfast heard a pop and all of a sudden I looked over it was a geyser coming out of the middle of Buelah Road," said Greg Cortazzo, the owner of one flooded home.

Cortazzo said he nearly spit out his breakfast. His wife called 911 and he ran to move his car out of the garage.

"And the water just started coming down this way and it was like a river the whole road," he said.

He said his appliances inside his garage are zapped by the water, but he did get a few things up and out of the way.

"Oh my God, we got a brand new freezer in there, our furnace is brand new, our hot water tank is brand new," Cortazzo said.

Across the street, his neighbor, Kristen Logsdon, said her mom yelled as soon as she heard a loud bang.

"She said she heard a really loud boom like a bang and she just looked out and [saw] the street open up," said Logsdon. "Probably my whole basement and my garage is probably flooded right now."

The water company told KDKA they hope to repair the break by the end of the day, but there's not yet any word on how long it will take the state to fix the road.

Residents are asked to avoid the area in the meantime.
