PENN HILLS (KDKA) - Police are looking for the suspect they say robbed the Family Dollar on Milltown Road in Penn Hills with a handgun. Police said the suspect approached the clerk who was stocking a shelf.

"The suspect yelled anybody here, the clerk came forward. The individual asked where's the toothpaste? So, as the guy turned around to show him where the toothpaste was, the suspect pulled a handgun. A black, semi-automatic pistol and demanded money," said Penn Hills Police Chief Howard Burton.

Police said the clerk opened the register and ran to the back of the store. The suspect stole a small amount of money from the register and ran out the front of the store. When police got to the scene, a K-9 officer was able to track the suspect to a parking lot behind the building.

"At that point in time, the dog stopped. Apparently the individual had a car that was parked in the area and left the area in a vehicle," said Burton.

Police said the surveillance video they do have is too grainy to see the man's face so detectives are checking nearby businesses to see if they have any helpful footage.

"The guy had his hoodie up, had it pulled tight. We couldn't get facial description so we're still looking at it," said Burton.

The suspect is a thin, black man. He's around 6-feet tall. He was wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans.

Police are asking for your help. If you have any information, you're being asked to call 911.
