Penn Hills School Board Member Facing Drug Charges Resigns
PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- A Penn Hills school board member facing drug charges has resigned.
Donald Kuhn Jr., 56, had served as a Penn Hills School District board member since 2015. But, he submitted his resignation on Friday.
It was a resignation the board accepted Monday night.
The move comes after Kuhn Jr. was charged with five misdemeanor charges after police say they found heroin and cocaine residue in his pockets.
KDKA-TV's Christine D'Antonio reached out to his mother, Sara Kuhn, who is also the mayor of Penn Hills. While she denied an on-camera interview, she did defend her son.
"Donald's resignation had nothing to do with this charge. It has to do with his health," she said.
She specifically referenced a pre-existing heart condition he has and said he has suffered multiple heart attacks, including one just seven days ago.
Police say Allegheny County deputies picked up Kuhn Jr. on March 23 at Linton Middle School. He was there to appear before a judge on an unrelated issue.
When police searched him, officers say they found bags and paper with cocaine and heroin residue along with one Vicodin pill.
In response to the April 12 charge, his mother said:
"(He) has a prescription for the pill by a doctor. The other two were not his and that will be presented at his hearing."
That hearing is slated for May 31.
