Trade Deadline: Pens Send Plotnikov To Arizona, Acquire Dustin Jeffrey

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Today is the National Hockey League's trade deadline and the Pittsburgh Penguins made a move early on in the day.

According to the Penguins' official website, they have sent Sergei Plotnikov to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick in 2017 along with Matthias Plachta.

Plachta's two-way contract is worth $743,000 at the NHL level. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Plachta made the jump to North America after helping Adler Mannheim win the DEL title a year ago in Germany.

He is expected to report to Penguins' AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

In 46 games with the AHL's Springfield Falcons, Plachta has seven points (two goals, five assists) with a minus-nine rating.

Plotnikov never really found his way in Pittsburgh since coming over from the KHL this summer. In 32 games, he registered just two assists and hasn't suited up for the Penguins since Jan.6.

The Penguins will host the Coyotes tonight at CONSOL Energy Center.

Over the weekend, the Penguins acquired defenseman Justin Schultz from the Edmonton Oilers for a 2016 third round draft pick.

Warsofsky Claimed By New Jersey

The Penguins saw another player leave the organization today, but it was not through a trade.

On Sunday, defenseman David Warsofsky was placed on waivers. Today, he was claimed by the New Jersey Devils.

Warsofsky played 12 games for the Penguins this season and scored one goal.

He has not played for the Penguins since suffering an injury during a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 17.

Referee Tim Peel lost and edge, fell down and could not get out of the way of a backward-skating Warsofsky.

Warsofsky landed on his head and suffered a concussion.

Prior to being claimed by New Jersey, he had just completed a conditioning stint in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Penguins Reacquire Dustin Jeffrey

Just after the deadline expired, reports began to trickle in that the Penguins had acquired Dustin Jeffrey from Arizona in a minor league deal.

According to the Penguins, also included in the trade is forward Dan O'Donoghue and defenseman James Melindy. Forward Matia Marcantuoni is headed to Arizona.

Jeffrey has been assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and O'Donoghue and Melindy have been assigned to the Wheeling Nailers.

Jeffrey was drafted by the Penguins in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Draft.
