Penguins Acquire G Leighton, D Oleksiak In Separate Trades

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have landed a veteran defenseman and a young defenseman in separate trades today.

According to the team's official website, the Penguins have acquired Michael Leighton and a 2019 fourth-round draft pick in the deal.

In exchange, the Penguins are sending Josh Archibald, goalie Sean Maguire and a 2019 sixth-round pick to Arizona.

Leighton, 36, has spent time with the AHL affiliates of the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning this season.

In 14 AHL games, Leighton is 4-4-4 with one shutout. He has only appeared in seven NHL games over the past seven years.

Leighton is expected to report to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Shortly after that deal was announced, the Penguins completed a trade with the Dallas Stars.

In this deal, the Penguins sent a 2019 conditional fourth-round pick to Dallas in exchange for defenseman Jamie Oleksiak.

The 6-foot-7-inch, 255-pound defenseman was selected 14th overall in the 2011 NHL Draft.

In 140 NHL games, Oleksiak has 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists).

The 24-year-old defenseman will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
