Oakmont SWAT Incident Comes To Peaceful End
OAKMONT (KDKA) -- One man is in custody after the Allegheny County Police SWAT Team surrounded a duplex in the 100-block of California Avenue in Oakmont late Wednesday night.
There were some tense moments last night for Oakmont Police and people living in the neighborhood where the incident took place.
It all started when a man got into a heated argument with his cousin.
California Avenue in Oakmont is usually a quiet street, but around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, neighbors called 911 after they became concerned for a woman's safety.
They said they could hear screaming and items being thrown. They even heard a death threat at one point.
"When the officers responded, a young lady exited in a hurry and said that she was in danger. They tried to get her out, she ran back into the duplex. The individual was shouting profanities and was very disturbed," Oakmont Police Chief Dave DiSanti said.
A man in his 40s, who is being identified only as an Iraq War veteran, was inside the home with a young woman, who is his cousin.
He warned police to not enter the home.
"He said, 'If you enter the premises, a war will be on," Chief DiSanti said.
That's why police set up a perimeter and called the Allegheny County SWAT team.
Neighbors were evacuated from their homes.
Police made contact with the man inside and about two-and-a-half hours later, he surrendered.
"It was a peaceful solution and actually a good night. It's something that could have been a lot worse," Chief DiSanti said.
Neighbors said the man suffers from PTSD from his time in the military and has been staying with his cousin since mid-January.
Police and paramedics were called to the same home a few weeks ago when the man was suffering from severe anxiety.
He is now at a mental health facility receiving treatment.
No one was injured in this incident. Police said they will file the appropriate charges at a later date.
