Parkway West Undergoes Final Closure This Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's the light at the end of the tunnel. Work continues on the Parkway West this weekend, but after that, it's over – at least for a while.

Anyone who has squeezed through the narrowed lanes of the Parkway West construction zone knows it's been a long, difficult summer. But it's coming to an end.

"For the first time since March, we're going to have the Carnegie interchange ramps open and restore the original lane widths through the area and across the bridges," said Dan Cessna with PennDOT.

Which means the 10-foot-6-inch lanes will be gone, and the 12 lanes will return. To get there, the inbound Parkway will close from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday and the outbound on Sunday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Throughout the summer, the bridges at Carnegie have been rebuilt, and you are going to notice the difference.

"The bridge is going to be wider, so there will actually be a small shoulder on the bridges," Cessna said, "where before it was three narrow lanes squeezed in, even in the permanent configurations."

While the road will be wide open for the majority of drivers, there will still be a bit of overnight work and some paving next spring to put down the permanent driving surface.

The Parkway East, meanwhile, will be open this weekend.
