Parkway West Work Continues This Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's the same traffic nightmare, just another weekend.
The Parkway West outbound will be closed all weekend between the Fort Pitt Tunnel and the Interstate 79 interchange.
The closure started Friday night at 11 p.m. and will reopen Monday morning at 6 a.m.
PennDOT has posted the following detour:
Outbound (westbound):
-From the Fort Pitt Bridge, motorists will take the ramp to North Route 837/Route 51 West End (Exit 69C)
-Follow Route 837 (West Carson Street) to the West End Circle
-Turn left toward South 19/51 West I-376 Airport
-From southbound Route 19/51, take the ramp towards West 376 South 19 Carnegie/Airport
- Continue to West 376 Carnegie/Airport
-From I-376 (Parkway West), take the Parkway Center Drive (Exit 68) exit
-Turn left onto Green Tree Road (Route 3101)
-Turn right onto Mansfield Avenue (Route 3062)
-Turn left onto Noblestown Road (Route 50)
-Noblestown Road becomes East Main Street
-Turn right onto Jane Street
-Jane Street becomes Mansfield Boulevard
-Mansfield Boulevard becomes West Main Street
-Follow West Main Street to I-79
-Take the ramp to northbound I-79
-Follow northbound I-79 to I-376
-End detour
It's a nine-mile detour, and you'll be sharing it with trucks.
"We're putting an awful lot of traffic onto some local roadways that just weren't' built to handle this type of traffic," says Steve Cowan, of PennDOT.
The detour is a single lane much of the way as was the detour a few weeks ago the opposite direction.
"During peak travel times, there were delays up to three hours," Cowan says.
More on alternative detours:
PennDOT is warning folks to leave especially early or find another route.
PennDOT says crews will work to mill and repave the road, as well as work on the shoulder.
