Parkway West Traffic Backs Up After Stolen Vehicle Hits Trooper

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An accident involving a State Police cruiser and a stolen pickup truck had a major effect on Parkway West traffic Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the accident happened on the inbound side of the road around 9 a.m. near the Green Tree overpass.

The suspect allegedly stole the pickup truck from Eighty Four, Pa. However, the suspect likely didn't know the truck had a GPS tracking device installed, which police used to track his every move.

"This was not a pursuit. The individual was ordered to pull over. He refused to. He struck one of our police vehicles," Trooper Robin Mungo said.

Troopers said the suspect jumped out after the crash, but he didn't get far.

"I wouldn't even say a foot pursuit. He attempted to get away and we were able to catch him," Trooper Mungo said.

The trooper involved in the accident was taken to an area hospital for observation and is expected to be okay.

The big headache was clearing the accident at the most inopportune time of day.

"We're just hoping to quickly clean this up so we can get the traffic flowing again," Trooper Mungo said.
