Parents Concerned Over Late School Buses In Penn Hills
PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- There were more delays today transporting students to and from school on buses in the Penn Hills School District.
Cindy McCue says her 6-year-old daughter, Morgan, was half-an-hour late coming home from school today, after being more than an hour late yesterday.
In addition, her son Lucas was dropped off at the wrong bus stop.
Terry McCue, the children's father, told KDKA-TV News, "My concern is for my kid's safety; no one could tell me where my daughter was, I couldn't reach anybody on the phone, it was very frustrating and disappointing."
Another Penn Hills parent, Winnie Vasco, said her 8-year-old son, Anthony, was also late again today, because the bus didn't pick him up on time for school this morning, and the bus was late bringing him back home this afternoon.
School Superintendent Thomas Washington released a written statement this afternoon, in part, asking parents for patience.
He blamed part of the problem on the fact that the district's three elementary schools this year are combined into one building.
And, just last night, the district's transportation director submitted his resignation, and the school board president apologized for the busing issues, adding that the district was trying to fix the problems.
In 2011, the district fired 75 school bus drivers in a contract dispute. And, the company providing transportation for students was replaced earlier this year by another bus firm.
