Pa. Lt. Governor John Fetterman recovering after stroke

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is recovering following a stroke, his campaign announced Sunday.

Fetterman, who is running for the Democratic nomination for the state's U.S. Senate seat, did not suffer "any cognitive damage," a release from his campaign said. He went to the hospital on Friday after he "wasn't feeling well."

"I had a stroke that was caused by a clot from my heart being in an A-fib rhythm for too long. Fortunately, Gisele spotted the symptoms and got me to the hospital within minutes. The amazing doctors here were able to quickly and completely remove the clot, reversing the stroke, they got my heart under control as well. It's a good reminder to listen to your body and be aware of the signs," the campaign's release from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital said.

Fetterman said he is feeling "much better" and on his way to a "full recovery."

"They're keeping me here for now for observation, but I should be out of here sometime soon. The doctors have assured me that I'll be able to get back on the trail, but first I need to take a minute, get some rest, and recover," Fetterman said in the release.

Fetterman said his campaign for U.S. Senate is not "slowing down." Four Democrats are running for Senate nomination: Fetterman, U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Jenkintown council member Alexandria Khalil.

"I just found out on live TV that Lieutenant Governor Fetterman suffered a stroke. Hayley and I are keeping John and his family in our prayers and wishing him a full and speedy recovery," Lamb tweeted.

Republican voters will sort through a lot of names for U.S. Senate, including Mehmet Oz, Dave McCormick and Kathy Barnette. On Sunday, Oz wished Fetterman a speedy recovery.

"I have cared for atrial fibrillation patients and witnessed the miracles of modern medicine in the treatment of strokes, so I am thankful that you received care so quickly. My whole family is praying for your speedy recovery," Oz said in a tweet.

Governor Tom Wolf also passed along well wishes.

"Sending well wishes for a speedy recovery to Lieutenant Governor @FettermanLT. Frances and I are praying for you, Gisele, Grace, Karl, and August."

The primary election is Tuesday.
