Overnight Snow Causes Slick Driving Conditions
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Some overnight snow and cold temperatures have caused some slick spots on the roads for the Tuesday morning commute.
According to KDKA-TV Meteorologist Dennis Bowman, a general 1-3 inches of snow fell around the area overnight.
Areas south of the city got the worst of it. As a result, some of the side streets in the South Hills were still snow-covered as of 6 a.m.
Fortunately, the main roads were in good shape.
Road crews have been out since the snow started to fall Monday night. Their challenge was getting the salt to actually take effect and melt the snow.
"We [have] a full surplus of salt, brine, calcium, anti-skid, which is mostly what we're using now because of the cold temperatures. So, in that regard, we're doing well," PennDOT Highway Foreman Joe Palumbo said.
There were several accidents reported overnight, but none were major.
If you do need to go out, take is slow and allow some extra time because we're not out of the woods just yet.
Temperatures were hovering around zero this morning and some more snow is on the way.
According to Bowman, some light snow will arrive this evening and will continue into Wednesday. Fortunately, only about an inch of accumulation is expected.
Tuesday's high will be about 20 degrees, while a high of 18 degrees is expected for Wednesday.
The average temperature for February so far is only 22 degrees. By comparison, the normal average temperature for the month is 31.1 degrees.
