1 killed in Greensburg apartment fire

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — One person is dead after an apartment fire in Westmoreland County.

Dispatchers tell KDKA-TV that the fire broke out at an apartment complex located along Indiana Drive in Greensburg on Monday night. Crews were first called out just after 11:30 p.m., but fire officials believe the fire started hours before they were called.

Patty Pitzer lives in an apartment below where the fire broke out.

"About a quarter to 11 last night, the beepers were going off in my apartment," Pitzer said.

Not long after fire crews arrived, it turned into something much worse when one of the firefighters noticed something.

"A window in the second-floor apartment looked like the blinds were melted," Greensburg Fire Department Chief Tom Bell said.

"Once they opened the door, which was not locked, they were met by heavy heat and smoke conditions," he added.

In this case, there was smoke but no fire.

"It seemed like the fire burned for a few hours and put itself out, starved for oxygen," the chief said.

The victim was identified as 40-year-old David Bramini. Investigators said his body was found only a few feet from the door.

No other injuries were reported.
