Mogie's Irish Pub owner fatally shot outside his bar

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. (KDKA) -- The owner of Mogie's Irish Pub in Lower Burrell died after he was shot outside of his bar on Thursday morning.

A Lower Burrell patrolman monitoring traffic at a nearby school zone heard a series of gunshots from the area of Leechburg and Wildlife Lodge Road around 9 a.m. and found David Magill suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso, the Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office said.

Officers and EMS crews tried to render aid to Magill, but he died at a hospital.

KDKA-TV's Mamie Bah spoke with Magill's son Patrick Magill.

"I can't believe that somebody would murder my father. Because that's what it is. It's murder," he said.

Within minutes of the shooting, the district attorney's office said 45-year-old Nathan Salem of Lower Burrell came to city hall and admitted he was involved in the shooting.

Salem was questioned by investigators and said he had two guns in his truck with expanding rounds that would penetrate a ballistic vest, the district attorney's office said.

Police said they found multiple bullet strikes on the driver's side door of Magill's vehicle and an apparent bullet hole that had gone through the restaurant's window and was lodged in an interior wall.

David Magill went by Mogie. He touched so many he came across.

"Mr. Magill was a big supporter of the back the blue movement and provided a lot of support to all local law enforcement throughout the years. Greatly appreciated," said Lower Burrell Chief John Marhefka.

Salem, who police said admitted to shooting Magill, was charged with criminal homicide.
