New Plans In Store For Parkway Center Mall Site?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It hasn't been a shopping destination in quite some time because there's not much left of the once popular Parkway Center Mall.
However, there are some new plans that could spark a revitalization of sorts.
Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith met with Mayor Bill Peduto and others today to continue to talks about the redevelopment of the mall.
While there have been rumors in the past, she says this sounds like the real-deal.
"It is an eyesore and it seems like a bit of a wasted space," George Dougherty said.
But, the Parkway Center Mall may soon be a premier shopping destination.
"They do intend on [demolishing] the current mall and putting in several businesses, I think it's somewhere around 80 storefronts, four major retailers, some restaurants. That is the plan that has been presented to us currently," Kail-Smith said.
With the current mall knocked down, it'll make way for a new shopping plaza that will possibly be similar to other successful shopping areas.
"He had compared it to something similar to a Settler's Ridge or The Waterfront," Kail-Smith said
Kail-Smith has been meeting with the developers, Kossman Development Company. Today, she says the mayor was brought up to speed about the latest discussions and plans.
Meetings will continue between officials and the developers as well as the community.
"It's an exciting time for Parkway Center Mall. I think not only do they have a real commitment to making changes up there, but the community is organizing around the development and district in general," Kail-Smith said.
Kail-Smith said the new shopping center could be open to the public, open for business, in just a few years.
