New Pitt WR Coach Greg Lewis: Pitt Job 'A Win-Win-Win For Me'
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- New Pitt wide receivers coach and former Eagles & Vikings wideout Greg Lewis joined Gregg Giannotti, Super Bowl XXXIX opponent Josh Miller, and Jim Colony on "The Fan Morning Show" Wednesday to talk about his decision to take the position and what lies ahead for him.
Lewis explained his rationale for leaving the same position at San Jose State to take the job at Pitt.
"I thought about such a storied institution football-wise and academic-wise, and it's something that I would want to be a part of," Lewis said. "Also, having played against coach Chryst in the Big Ten, I heard good things about him and wanted to be a part of what he's building out here in Pittsburgh. And then, second, I needed to get out of California as well. My family was in New Jersey, and this gets me just a little bit closer to them. So, it was a win-win-win for me."
Lewis told the guys that a major part of the allure of working with Paul Chryst is what he does for his players' chances of succeeding in the NFL.
"Offensively, he's had a lot of guys that have went on to big things in the NFL," Lewis said. "And I want to be a part of helping guys achieve their dreams."
The topic of Super Bowl XXXIX inevitably came up, as Josh asked him about whether or not he saw Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb's storied vomiting spell late in the fourth quarter of that game.
"I really wasn't paying attention to him," Lewis said. "I had just gotten in the game in the second half, and it was my second year in the league. So, I was just focused on hearing the play. Now, you can look at clips and it might look like he threw up. It might look like he didn't, but that's a whole different deal. I'll let him deal with that whole vomit deal."
When Josh mentioned that he didn't notice the Eagles displaying a sense of urgency, Lewis didn't totally disagree with that sentiment.
"Looking back on it, it seemed as though we didn't have a sense of urgency," Lewis said. "But, we really did. It just didn't click the way we wanted it to click, and unfortunately we came up on the short end of the stick."
