National Weather Service: Flooding Issues A Result Of Perfect Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Local homes, businesses and roads are under water today because of the rain and snow this weekend that sent rivers and streams spilling over their banks.

Experts with the National Weather Service say the flooding was caused by a perfect storm, of sorts.

Flood waters over the weekend wreaked havoc in a number of western Pennsylvania communities.

In Waynesburg, Ten Mile Creek went over its banks, flooding homes and businesses.

"We had a couple campers with people trapped in them. We had a couple guys with life jackets in boats and got them out. We had a handful of cars in high water that stalled out and so forth," said Waynesburg - Franklin Volunteer Chief  Jeff Marshall.

Emergency management officials from both the county and state are surveying the damage. They say Rogersville and Waynesburg were the hardest hit areas.

Wiley Stadium on Waynesburg University's campus sits next to a creek, the field was submerged in Sunday's flood.

"So yesterday we had a little bit of warning that it was going to flood but the water came up very quickly. We did our best to secure what we could. But in the end the safety of our people was more important so we had to leave a lot of the equipment in the vehicles down here at the field," Waynesburg University Media Spokesperson Heidi Szuminsky said.

Today you can see the writing on a goalpost pad. Yesterday you could only see about a foot at the top.

"We are talking with some companies about what it will cost to replace this turf on the field, but we do know that it will be upwards of a half a million dollars. It will be a very expensive project to replace," Szuminsky said.

County officials say it is too soon to know how much it will cost to repair the damage done county-wide.
