Nasty Storm Ushers In Winter's Return After Taste Of Spring

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Putting the plows back on their trucks was the last thing local public works crews wanted to do today.

Especially after the beautiful weather of the past two days; and what a contrast it is.

On Tuesday, we were sun-splashed. Today, splashed by rain puddles.

A leisurely ride in the park on Tuesday would have been not quite so pleasant today.

"Yesterday we were out in shorts and a t-shirt, and here we are today, soaking wet and temperatures dropping even more," said one local resident. "Welcome to Pittsburgh, huh?"

PennDOT has been busy trying to get enough salt on hand for this wave of winter.

"We've actually sent trucks to Breezewood to pick up additional salt and bring it in," said PennDOT District 11 Manager Angelo Pampena. "We started yesterday. We brought in about 1,000 tons yesterday and about 300 to 400 tons additionally today.

Crews are ready to do battle, and know the fight won't let up after the rush hour tonight. In fact, Thursday morning's rush hour could be a challenge primarily because of the winds at dawn.

"With the low temps and the winds, we are going to have icing conditions," said Pampena.
