5 teens in custody after Pittsburgh-area shooting

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) — Five teens are in custody after an early morning shooting in Ross Township.

Police said a fight broke out on Sixth Street in the Laurel Gardens neighborhood just after midnight on Tuesday. Officials said the teens scattered when police arrived, but they were all found and arrested by responding officers.

Police say one of the teens was shot in the leg, but he's expected to be OK.

"As our officers pulled up, the other four people involved in the fight took off running and scattered throughout the area," Ross Township Deputy Police Chief Brian Kohlhepp told KDKA-TV.

Ross Township police officers, with the help of several other departments and a Pittsburgh police K-9, combed the area for the remaining four teenagers.

"After a search, which took about an hour and a half in total, all those individuals were taken into custody," Kohlhepp said.

Through the investigation, it was learned that all five teens are from outside Ross Township. Investigators are now working to determine why they were in the area and what sparked the fight.

"The fact that they're juveniles, we are limited in what we can release as to the details from this fight," Kohlhepp said.

KDKA-TV talked to neighbors on Tuesday who said they were shaken up over the shooting. They described the neighborhood as quiet.

One woman said she heard arguing and looked outside her window to see what was going on. That is when she heard a gunshot.
