Speeding Cars Cause Fatal Crash On West End Bridge

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two cars traveling at a high rate of speed, side-by-side, across the West End Bridge caused a fatal accident on Tuesday night.

The span was completely shut down just before 11 p.m. and didn't reopen till the early morning hours of Wednesday.

According to a police spokesperson, two cars were speeding and one lost control, slamming into three other cars.

"There were two cars coming in off of 51, heading over the West End Bridge at a very high rate of speed. They were driving side-by-side. One of the vehicles lost control and crashed into other cars creating a mass collision," said Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesman Chris Togneri.

One person was confirmed dead, one is in critical condition, and the conditions of three other victims is unknown.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 27-year-old Cory Jones of Pittsburgh.

The crash happened closer to the Carson Street side of the bridge.
