Move-ins begin on University of Pittsburgh campus this weekend

University of Pittsburgh welcomes the newest Panthers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Students are starting a big chapter in their lives on the University of Pittsburgh's beautiful Oakland campus.

It's going to be a busy week as more than 8,000 students are moving into their dorm rooms. Moving carts full of belongings and bittersweet goodbyes.

"I can't wait, I mean I'm still a little bit nervous, you know, leaving home and everything but I'm still super excited," said Mia McCoog a Pitt freshman from Baltimore, Maryland.

Kevin McCoog is sending his baby girl, Mia, off to college.

"Excited for her, sad for me, so, losing my baby, it's going to be a big day," the senior McCoog said.

The university gave students assigned arrival times and dates, which are spaced out through Friday to ensure a quick move-in experience.

Heavy traffic is expected and several streets will be closed.

"I could not imagine if everyone was moving in at once; that would be a lot. I definitely like how they split it up between floors," Mia said.

Ready for all things new.

"Probably meeting new people, new city, I'm excited for all the new experiences and new classes and just everything new," Camryn Payne said. Payne comes to Pitt by way of Louisville, Kentucky.

"A new environment and to meet new people," MaKeith Hedgpeth, a Raleigh native, said.

And to start focusing on their majors.

"I'm feeling amazing, I can finally move into my dorm and be part of the engineering program and I can't wait for the next step," Hedgpeth said.

Masks are required indoors in public places on campus because the community transmission level in Allegheny County is 'high.'

Students will find a covid test in their dorms to take.

Those exposed to covid, regardless of vaccination status, do not need to quarantine - but should wear a mask for 10 days indoors and get tested five days after exposure.

An exciting semester ahead, classes in-person start on August 29th.

"I just want the kids to live freely and enjoy themselves, concentrate on their schoolwork, make friends, and move on with life," Kevin McCoog said.
